HORTICULTURE - Commercial Farming - Intercropping

Since horticulture plantations
take time to become a part of commercial production, we at Shivalaya Farm indulge in intercrops.

Inter cropping provides us with many advantages:

  • It gives revenue during the gestation period of a crop when it is planted in new plantation.
  • Crops like banana can be used as shade plants and they also give produce in just 14-18 months.
  • It reduces weed problem.
  • Moisture holding in soil increases as intercrop provides mulching.
  • Plants with long interplant distance provide available space and light for intercrop.
  • Multilayer cropping like Lakhibaug provides additional revenue in same area.

At our farm, in heavily sloped plantation areas, we have provided flood irrigation with banana plantation on water channel so that even low depth soil and sloping water channel can be used for crop production.
We practice intercropping with our plantations of Coconut, Areca nut and recently cultivated Mango orchard. Some exotic fruits like Mangosteen have been taken as an intercrop as well with Coconut. Ramphal (Annona Reticulate) is also cultivated under the shade of Coconuts.

At Shivalaya farms we possess a vast collection of plants same are showcased in our database.
